Growth needs water – this basic requirement has become increasingly important since FACE began landscaping the educational campus on a large scale. Now, a water pump additionally supplies the FACE educational campus with industrial water from the nearby river “Shire”.
WATER FOR THE NURSERY
In addition to the secondary school and the newly founded elementary school, a tree nursery has been established. The educational campus passes on ecological knowledge to both students and villagers: Which native plant species are suitable for the Malawian soil? How can plants be fertilized naturally? What is the point of reforestation in the region? FACE answers these questions vividly on its own green spaces.
WATER FOR THE VILLAGERS
By being able to rely on river water, FACE no longer has to use drinking well water for watering or sanitation. Villagers can now continue to obtain filtered water directly from the well on the FACE educational campus. Around 30 families make use of this option.
WATER FOR SANITATION
With the steady expansion of the education campus, the need for sanitation and hygiene is increasing. The industrial water needed for this can now be taken from the river, which is about 500 meters away, and be used for the toilets.
THANKS FOR THE WATER
“For several years, we have been looking for a solution to the problem of water scarcity on the campus,” says association chairman Edgar Frey. “Connecting to the “Shire” river was our desired solution from the beginning. To do this, we first needed to plan the technical implementation and win supporters for the project in the village who would approve the construction of the pumping station on the river.” A large part of the project, which cost around €11,300, was provided by the Lower Saxony BINGO Environmental Foundation, which FACE was able to convince with its sustainable concept as well as the need for water harvesting. The water supply will now be secured for many years to come.
